The Senior Consultant, Small/Medium Business Income Tax Incentives (179D Project Manager) leads and delivers projects that help clients identify, document, calculate, and secure a variety of Federal and state income tax incentives—including Small/Medium Business incentive programs, Federal income tax planning opportunities, and Research & Experimentation (R&D) tax credits.
This role manages key project workstreams, analyzes financial and technical data, conducts tax research, supports audit defense, and prepares and reviews technical deliverables. The Senior Consultant serves as a primary point of contact for clients, collaborates with cross-functional tax teams, and provides guidance and review for Consultants on the team. Work may require time onsite with clients and coordination with technical, engineering, financial, and tax personnel.

- Creates a positive team experience by serving as a role model and supporting team development.
- Provides coaching, mentoring, and on-the-job training to Consultants, including technical guidance, data analysis techniques, and project methodology.
- Reviews work performed by Consultants to ensure accuracy, completeness, and alignment with project standards.
- Facilitates knowledge sharing and contributes to process improvement across the practice.
Client
- Leads client interviews with technical, engineering, finance, and tax personnel to gather information relevant to incentive qualification.
- Serves as a primary point of contact for client workstreams, ensuring timely, clear communication and outstanding client service.
- Responds to client requests and manages expectations throughout the engagement cycle.
- Participates in client meetings to present findings, methodologies, and tax positions.
- Develops and supports client proposals, planning strategies, and deliverable presentations.
- Collaborates with Federal Income Tax, International Tax, and other Ryan practice groups to support integrated client solutions.
Value
- Leads the gathering, organization, and analysis of large volumes of financial, technical, engineering, and operational data; creates or reviews complex calculation models and databases.
- Performs and reviews tax law research, technical writing, and documentation supporting tax positions, including incentive qualification under applicable Internal Revenue Code sections (e.g., Sections 41, 174).
- Analyzes expenses and activities for qualification under a variety of tax incentive programs, including R&D credits and other Federal income tax planning projects.
- Supports and may lead audit defense activities, including responding to IRS and state inquiries, preparing documentation packages, and assisting managers with strategy.
- Prepares and reviews memorandums, interview reports, tax incentive calculations, and other project deliverables prior to manager review.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Construction-related fields
- Four-year college degree from an accredited institution in practice-relevant area with 3+ years practice-relevant experience.
- Must have excellent organization and time management skills, strong communication skills, and willingness to learn and be a team player.
- Strong analytical, communication, writing, and project coordination skills.
- Proven ability to manage workstreams, lead client interactions, and review team deliverables.
Preferred Experience:
- Develop and maintain relationships with a revolving list of clients in the AEC industry
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of tax knowledge as pertaining to the 179D tax deduction and various sustainability/clean energy incentives
- Demonstrate strong inter- and intra-personal skills
- Ability to communicate with C-suite, CPA, Principal, and Professional Architecture/Engineers on a variety of industry-specific topics.
- Engineering, Architecture, or Construction Management background/degree a strong plus
- Strong organizational and time-management skills required
Computer Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft® Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, and web-based research tools.
- Familiarity with legal/technical tax research platforms preferred.
Certificates and Licenses:
Valid driver’s license required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Requires limited supervisory responsibilities, including training peers and checking work for accuracy and completeness.
