[Remote] Story Editor, Chalkbeat and Votebeat

Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Civic News Company is the parent company of nonprofit newsrooms focused on education, elections, and public health. They are seeking a Story Editor for Chalkbeat and Votebeat to edit stories, ensuring they are balanced and compelling, while providing editorial support and coaching to reporters. Responsibilities • Line editing stories from Civic News Company’s Votebeat and Chalkbeat • Making sure stories incorporate regional or national context and are balanced, compelling, properly sourced • Ensuring that stories are precise and clear, read smoothly, and adhere to AP and Civic News style • Attending daily and weekly planning meetings • Providing editorial support to bureau chiefs and managing editors • Inputting and proofing stories in our CMS and occasionally helping with homepage curation and photo uploading • Providing one-on-one coaching and mentoring for reporters when needed Skills • 5+ years experience in daily journalism • Expertise in story structure, line editing, and copy editing • Experience working in a CMS • Stellar news judgment • Strong interpersonal skills with a knack for working with early career and experienced reporters and collaborating with other editors • A demonstrable interest in U.S. public education and voting rights • Deep knowledge of U.S. public education and voting rights • Journalism experience in New York, Denver, Indianapolis, Michigan, Memphis, Chicago, Newark, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Wisconsin, or Texas • Fluency in Spanish Benefits • Medical, vision, and dental insurance • Time off that truly supports rest, including 20 days of PTO, a paid one-week recess, 5 sick days, 3 floating holidays, and 12 paid holidays in 2026 • Retirement support through a 401(k) with a 4% employer match that is immediately vested • 100% paid parental leave: 18 weeks fully paid, plus a 2-week part-time return-to-work ramp-up • Flexible Spending Plan for eligible medical or childcare expenses • Annual professional development stipend • Employer-provided life insurance and short- and long-term disability coverage • Monthly reimbursement for cell phone and internet expenses Company Overview • Civic News Company is a nonprofit publisher that offers Chalkbeat and Votebeat services.
