About the position The New Graduate Registered Nurse (RN) position in the GI Surgery & Surgical Oncology Acute Care unit at UNC Medical Center offers a unique opportunity for recent nursing graduates to begin their careers in a supportive and dynamic environment. This role involves providing competent clinical nursing care, participating in patient education, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality patient outcomes. The position is part of a yearlong residency program designed to facilitate the transition from academia to practice, allowing new nurses to develop their skills and confidence in a hospital setting. Responsibilities Participates in identifying and meeting learning needs of self and patients. , Identifies expected patient outcomes and seeks guidance in revising care plans as needed. , Demonstrates competence in caring for patients with complex problems, including physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety aspects of care. , Develops goals for professional growth and participates in unit goals and performance improvement activities. , Recognizes data from complex situations to determine priorities for care and anticipates discharge needs. , Collaborates with patients and families to prepare or update the plan of care, addressing cultural and ethnic issues. , Reads relevant journals and brings ideas to the staff for assessment of applicability. Requirements RN License in North Carolina by the first day of employment. , Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification. , Graduation from a school of professional nursing. , No prior experience required, suitable for new graduates. Nice-to-haves Master's degree in Nursing. , Bachelor's degree in Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing. , Experience with discharge planning and Foley catheter care.
